Introduction

Welcome to Lead 4.0: The Transformative School Leadership Online Programme.
This online learning experience is designed to strengthen the capacity of school leaders to drive effective teaching, learning, and governance across South African schools. Developed under the Boitjhorisong Resource Centre and delivered by the Matthew Goniwe School of Leadership and Governance (MGSLG), the programme uses a structured, interactive, and practice-oriented approach to leadership development.

As an online participant, you will engage with multimedia lessons, reflection activities, case studies, and school-based application tasks. The programme supports principals, deputy principals, and senior management teams in developing reflective, strategic, and culturally responsive leadership practices suited to South Africa’s diverse education landscape.

Purpose of the Online Programme

The online programme is designed to:

  • Provide a clear and structured framework for developing and applying school leadership principles in digital learning environments.

  • Guide you through sequential, interactive learning units that blend theory, multimedia content, and practical application.

  • Support school improvement initiatives through online collaborative activities, capstone projects, and data-informed planning tools.

  • Build a shared understanding of leadership dimensions that contribute to effective, inclusive, and sustainable school systems.

This online platform serves as both a learning environment and a professional development space, supporting continuous growth, reflection, and leadership practice long after the programme is completed.

Alignment with SACE Professional Teaching Standards

The Transformative School Leadership Online Programme is aligned with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) Professional Teaching Standards. These standards outline the required knowledge, skills, ethics, and professional conduct expected of educators and school leaders nationwide.

By embedding these standards into the online curriculum, the programme ensures that your learning is aligned with national expectations and contributes directly to your professional accountability and growth.

The programme’s five leadership domains—Strategic, Executive, Instructional, Cultural, and Organisational Leadership—mirror the competencies emphasised in the SACE standards. This alignment ensures that school leaders develop the capacity to implement ethical, inclusive, and evidence-based practices that elevate teaching and learning in their schools.

Programme Outcomes

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Apply principles of strategic, executive, instructional, cultural, and organisational leadership in school contexts.

  • Design and implement strategic and school improvement plans aligned with district and national priorities.

  • Lead effective teaching and learning through supervision, PLCs, and ICT integration.

  • Promote inclusive, ethical, and culturally responsive educational environments.

  • Manage change effectively and lead collaborative, high-performing teams.
