Unit 2:
How can leadership styles applied in the workplace and how do they impact on a business?
INTRODUCTION
Leaders need to know the importance of applying leadership styles to achieve business goals. Understanding your leadership style enable leaders to pinpoint behavior’s that either help or prevent them from achieving their goals. In unit 1, we provided a detailed analysis of the differences between management and leadership and the assessment methods on this content. We will unpack the meaning, application and impact of leadership styles that are stated on page 17 of the 2021 Exam Guidelines.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- At the end of this Unit, you should be able to:
- Explain how businesses should apply each leadership style in the workplace
- Evaluate the impact of EACH leadership style on businesses
- Suggest teaching and assessment methods on leadership styles
Points that must be considered when teaching the application and impact of leadership
styles
- Write the following leadership styles on the Smartboard/Chalkboards:
o Democratic
o Autocratic
o Laissez faire/Free reign
o Charismatic
o Transactional
- Explain the meaning of each of the above-mentioned leadership style using demonstrations.
- Demonstrate the application of each leadership style and request learners to observe the process as follows:
- Write the following leadership styles on the Smartboard/Chalkboards:
o Democratic (Participating)
o Autocratic (Commanding)
o Laissez faire/Free reign (Hands off approach)
o Charismatic Leadership (Charm/Personality)
o Transactional Leadership style (Give & take)
- The table above shows that leaders can be apply different leadership styles depending on situations.
- Ensure that learners first understand the application of each leadership style to enable them to analyses the impact of each style that will be covered in the next lesson
- Request learners to read other facts on the application of each leadership style in the workplace.
- Provide a detailed description of each fact then stimulate debates on which leadership style can be regarded as best and why?
- Request them to suggest the advantages and disadvantages of each leadership style before as baseline assessment before teaching this document Link the application of each leadership style with the impact and request learners to suggest other ways in which they can master this content.
- Note the above table is used as an example of the relationship between the application of each leadership style and the impact thereof.
- Learners must be taught all facts on the application and impact of each leadership style.
- Bring newspaper articles on any leadership style
- Remind learners on the meaning of “ impact” e.g. positives AND/OR negatives
- NOTE: Learners must know the differences between democratic and autocratic leadership styles as they are comparable in relation to other leadership styles.

- Only focus on leadership styles stated in the 2021 Examination Guidelines
- Request learners to develop questions based on the video to enable them to acquire skills on responding different types of questions and to gain insight.

- Identify the leadership styles from scenarios/statements.
- Suggest situations in which the above-mentioned leadership styles can be used/applied.
- Discuss the advantages of each leadership style
- Evaluate the impact of each leadership style
